NovelYeast is a spin-off company from the research group of Em. Prof. Johan Thevelein at VIB/KU Leuven. It is an R&D company focused on a variety of applications with yeast. It aims to exploit its extensive knowledge and technical know-how with yeast research and the many industrial applications of yeast for development and commercial implementation of superior industrial yeast strains and associated processes. NovelYeast has already world-leading yeast strains for production of 1G and 2G bioethanol, isobutanol, lactic acid, 2,3-butanediol and isomaltulose. A major focus is on the production of bioethanol with lignocellulosic biomass, including on site cellulase production with engineered Trichoderma fungus and fermentation with thermotolerant, cellulase-secreting Cellusec® yeast. It has a dedicated team of 8 researchers with 10-20 years of experience in industrial yeast development. Its lab facilities are located in the Bio-incubator BIO4 in Leuven-Heverlee.
